Stand at Mason and Geary streets, one block from Union Square, and you are standing in front of a 45-room hotel called Club Donatello. San Francisco’s own address records list 2,293 separate street addresses inside that single building.
That is not a data error. Club Donatello has sold its rooms the same way for more than forty years: as timeshares, split into weekly ownership intervals, each one carried by the city as its own legal parcel and its own address. The resort’s own owners’ materials count 2,295 such interests, almost exactly matching the city’s tally of 2,293. An average San Francisco block carries about 45 addresses. This one block, because of one hotel, carries 2,430 addresses: the second-highest total of the city’s 4,929 blocks, and enough by itself to equal roughly 54 ordinary blocks put together.
The rest of block 0306 is a scrapbook of small hotels from the same general era. The Somerton, the Paisley, the Maryland, Hotel Cosmos and the Elfred Clark were all built between 1900 and 1922. All still stand under the city’s Uptown Tenderloin–Union Square conservation rules. None comes close to Club Donatello’s count. The runner-up parcel on the block, a 1911 building at 476 Geary Street, holds three addresses.
Only one other San Francisco block has more addresses than block 0306. Block 0792, near Fulton and Grove streets in the Fillmore, holds 2,432, two ahead of Club Donatello’s block. This desk did not examine what accounts for that block’s own total tonight.
Confidence in the address counts and the block ranking is high: both come from the city’s own address-to-parcel file, queried live tonight. Confidence in why Club Donatello was carved into so many pieces is also high, resting on the resort’s own published ownership history rather than a single unverified claim. This file cannot say how many of the 2,295 owners have ever stood on the block their address technically shares with the Somerton and the Paisley next door.
